Bookshop owner Rob Turnbull at Reiver Reads presents a free talk by researcher Tony Fox in the Carlisle Market this Saturday 15^th August 2026.

‘On the 90th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War, we are delighted to welcome Tony Fox to Reiver Reads, for what is sure to be a lively and stimulating discussion. Tony was the researcher for the Michael Crowley book Remember Me To My Comrades- Letters and Diaries of the International Brigade.’ said bookshop owner Rob Turnbull.

‘The International Brigades were set up by the Communists International (Comintern), the Communist Party of Great Britain sent over 2500 volunteers to Spain. We’ll be looking at just a few. Many young men went to fight in Spain, and many never returned, they had various motivations for joining, many being Jewish recognised the threat that Franco and Hitler posed.’

‘Tony’s talk will explore these themes and the continuing relevance of a conflict that defined the left for a generation.’

The free talk on Saturday 15^th August 2026 will begin at 2.30pm at Reiver Reads, Carlisle Market Hall. Refreshments will be provided.
